The last chapter in SF
Jan 25th, 2020.
An Introduction.
In 2017, Jess was introduced to our quiet, oversized, and mainstream lives... Little did we know, that everything was about to change. The winds swirled overhead as she landed and within a couple weeks our loud, mini, hippie-witch-grandma-babe became ingrained in our lives!
Coming in hot with a list of must-see, -try, -listen, -taste, -climb items for SF, Jess managed to keep us busy trying new things and living our best fun-sized life.
In honor of one chapter coming to a close (and another very exciting one just beginning!!), we want to take a look back at some of the beautiful moments you’ve helped us create! Thank you for being a part of our lives in San Francisco, and we are so excited and proud of you for making big moves across the seas in New Zealand! Don’t forget us and please come back to re-visit your San Francisco community soon 😻
Love,
Everyone

2017
Let’s take a walk down memory lane back to 2017...
Enter 2017… when some of us all met Jess Tilles for first time. Something we may be too old to do but in our early 20s we were able to stick through 9 hours of drinking. Santa Con was the day into the night we were all obliterated… but Santas and mistletoe and FUN! We all look very youthful, oh what a few years in SF has done to our age. It was also one of the first and last times we all decided to go out in the Marina, and then proceed to eat Italian Homemade food. The beginning of an era!
Meanwhile at work... Jess quickly becomes a driving force of work parties with Holmes (and Eva and Jess discover they are both proponents of Bell sleeves). Of course Jess=where the party @ after having met most of the team at a highly questionable night tearing up the Castro prior Olga’s birthday.
Celebrating big moves to the bay, Jess, Shiri, and Leeza united in the gorgeous SF winter on Hattie St Balcony (a local’s hidden gem). It was then that Leeza and Jess instantly realized they were meant to meet and pursue all the best indie-folk-hippie music together. The rest of the concert saga is history!
2018
March 2018
Jess and Leron feeling lucky on St. Patty’s day by wearing all black and going against the mainstream in classic Jess fashion.
April 2018
Jess and Eva jamtfo to Penguin Prison at at their favorite SF venue, The Independent on Eva’s bday. They groove from the front row where Jess has zero obstacles blocking her line of site. Eva gets to hold the gee-tar.
Parisa's first day in SF! A messy deep dish experience could only be ended with a super fun barcade.
August 2018
For many of us, it was our very first overnight backpacking trip that hot summer weekend in July. Leeza had on the heaviest pack and powered ahead of the group (per usual), while the rest of us fumbled behind. We all kept enthusiasm high and it was a glorious moment when we 1) dipped into the freezing cold water at the end of day one and 2) when we finally took our packs, shoes and socks off at the end of the hike, and we all agreed that we would not do that trail again if someone paid us a million fat ones. Such a memorable trip- it was a great shared bonding experience for us to be out exploring in nature, and struggling together but ultimately powering through. Caroline was peeing every 20 minutes of the hike as usual, Leron was making interesting jokes and Shiri and Jess kept our spirits high!
Jess has her first grown woman trip to LA with Eva. They stay in Sunset Junction (Micheltorena stairs pictured) and have a romantic werk wife stay at the legendary Casa Crawford Airbnb, where their room doesn’t lock and they share a bathroom with the elderly spooky owner. Highlights include swan boating on Echo Park Lake, yoga at Equinox, eating at Mh Zh and Sqirl, unwinding at Wi Spa, crashing a mansion party in the Hollywood hills, and celebrating Lauren’s 30th birthday. Jess also very much enjoys catching up with a friend in Venice Beach.
In spring 2018, Jess made moves in the city to make friends and become ~sporty~ with Shiri in the Play Recess league. Striking the perfect balance between minimal coordination and slap-cup, we learned to destroy the competition in what really counts! Culminating in an ultimate scavenger hunt debacle, Spinelli led the group to victory! (Not actually sure if we completed the scavenger, but the memories we do have were definitely winners :) ).
October 2018
Halloweenies with our favorite Grandmama. Photographed left to right: Grandmama (Jess), Wednesday (Caroline), thing (Cole), Gomez (Leron), Morticia (Shiri), Lurch (Jack) and Pugsley (Jacob)
In the spooky month of October 2019, the Fulton Fam got together to throw our first rager - an extravagant Addams family party. Thanks to the creative inspiration of the group, we were able to pull off some spooky vibes, including spider webs, grey hair, ridiculous mustaches, and more.
Late 2018 marked the beginning of the Fulton house era- too many nights sitting around watching Fort Night, debating Zinc in double-blind tests, and hundreds more conversations that none of us can remember… We will never forget the eclectic energy Jess brought into the Fulton house. The large batches of pasta & pesto she cooked and the lotions & soaps she brewed up. Brew hahah. As the first alumnus of the Fulton house, Jess has since ventured out to #adult in her 2 bedroom apartment in Nob Hill.
Before Jess left us, we had one last BirthRight hoorah with Jacob’s new friends. There was a peculiar guy making brisket in our oven, and handing samples around like a Costco on a Saturday afternoon. Shiri infamously used her photoshop skills to crop the beloved Leron Gil into the house party he missed. Good times!
December 2018
How could we forget the numerous ski trips in 2019 with Jess? There were so many weekends bopping around down the slopes in Heavenly, Kirkwood and North Star. On this specific photographed trip, Jess and Caroline celebrated their birthdays with a weekend getaway to Northstar. Too much Secret Hitler was played. Things got wild. Other board games were forced upon us (lol). But looking back it was a great time hanging with friends, drinking champagne on the mountain and blasting some groovy tunes down the mountain.
Over the holidays, Chinese food is a tradition… a very delicious meal at Koi Palace! While living in Fulton, there was a 2 month hiatus where just Jess, Caroline and Jacob occupied the house. Some like to call that period of time “the cleanest time of Fulton”, others call bullshit. The three bonded over diverging political opinions, bitching about who never cleaned their dishes and doing korean face masks.
2019
January 2019
Ringing in the New 2019 Year in San Francisco with a large group of our friends was quite the experience! Great to celebrate together together at the boom boom room with some live music (but also not great that the window got smashed 😂)
One of Jess’s many ascents at Mission Cliffs! Go Jess send it!
Only Jess and her gleaming charisma could rally coworkers to see a concert AND have work pay for our HH drinks (thanks for the sus hand-written receipt for expensing, @Madrone Art Bar). We saw her beloved Magic City Hippies at The Independent which was funky and upbeat Miami vibes all around. Also pictured are Mary and Georgine who are/soon working in New Zealand as well.
February 2019
Always remember the earplugs! Jess knows how to concert.
March 2019
Soccer moms go to Warby Parker. Epic picture and times of Jess with the Fulton boys.
April 2019
A new(ish) face joined the Holmes Fire SF team- finally Jess and Irene’s LDR was over! This was our first team building activity as a new group and with Jess in charge of course we ended up climbing!
Celebrating Eva’s Birthday with a fun rooftop HH at El Teco on a sunny spring day!
Jess, Eva and Irene order frozen pina coladas and take in the views before a Mission bar crawl of sorts, closing nice and early with burritos from El Farolito.
May 2019
Hanging out at the top of the SalesForce tower. Pro tip, bring a structural engineer for some great commentary.
Bay to Breakers with team eggs and team hippies (aka Jess’s typical aesthetic)!
Always discussing the most important topics at work- like water bottle sticker placement! #bigdecisions
July 2019
One of the best Holmes site visits ever!!
Jess and Eva drive up North for a wine country getaway they won a while back at a silent auction. En route they plow through La Croix cans, have a rad lunch in Sebastopol and dip their feet in the picturesque Russian River. Early evening, they taste and tour facilities at Moshin Vineyards in Forestville (shout outs to that delightfully dry pinot noir rosé) before stargazing (ft. skunk!) and cozying up in a cabin suite with the movie Sideways. The next day, they have a beautiful morning walk by the vineyards. By way of Jess’ parents, they land in Ronald McDonald’s home for a private tasting. Jess learns she loves fruit-forward wines!
September 2019
The second infamous backpacking trip! **GIRLS TRIP**!!!! The time we thought it’d be smart to not get camping food and cook kraft mac and cheese with no microwave. What it came out to be was a big bowl of cheese goop, with Ella, Anna, Olaf and unicorn characters drowned in there. A big SHOUTOUT to Marie for pulling through with the fancy face creams and sharing with the group, us talking about waxing *ahem* body parts and again, Leeza leading the charge with Foxy! At night, we laid out on the benches and stared up at the stars - the night was so clear! We couldn’t stop laughing over things I can no longer remember… except about discovering the world was indeed not flat. Once again, Caroline likely peed 20 times total, and was coughing and heaving (sorry for being sick!) 😅
Jess and Eva get weird in Portland! Where they sip rooftop beers, frolick in the Nike HQ ( a mass timber wonderland), meet Big Foot and Krampus, procure free passes to a saucy community event, dance to 80s music at a goth bar/visit crusty dive bars, have a prime strawberry cough (and beanie) experience @ Electric Lettuce, savor prime Bamboo sushi, and Jess gets a cute ass tragus piercing. Throughout the trip Jess wears a lot of black to Eva’s delight #moody #angsty. On their walks to the Portland office, Jess appreciates the changing fall leaves and residential neighborhoods, feeling reminded of home on the East Coast.
Just another amazing Jill Hike ;)
October 2019
OK - San Francisco was filled with challenges… and Tough Mudder was one of them! Although we found out that at the end of the race - you would be electrocuted - we persisted. We - as a team - got through to the finish line. So proud of everyone for completing the race! Although Caroline was the only one who copped out of electric shock. The number of times we dunked into mud baths and climbed 10 ft walls…
Jess’s favorite time of the year and a visit from Tariq! Jess and Eva decorated the whole office to look super ~spooky~ON ANOTHER LEVEL (featuring creepy clown photos, hella cobwebs and caution tape, bloody stickers, and of course fake plastic bugs) and organized a halloween bar crawl around North Beach (@ Maggie McGarrie’s and Tupelo)!
November 2019
A big fan of live music, Jess is a great Concert buddy. Always down to explore new music and venues! This was such a fun bonding night where we got greyhounds, beers, caught up on life and danced at Polo & Pan. So fun!
Proxima Parada at Milk Bar birthday concert where Jess got a shout-out from the band! ft. a blurry instagram story and classic typos. Prior, the whole squad turns up at Hobson’s Choice over punch bowls.
HP marathon or studying for PE? Well! let's master both!
December 2019
One of the best days in December was unexpected. It started out with a simple brunch plan but ended in a full day of activities!! New spot on polk was where Jess and Maries’ friendship began and continued to blossom!
After having an amazing meal (great eggs benedict) and hours of catching up we decided to walk back to our houses together (since we are neighbors!!). Jess was excited to see Marie’s new couch (that was 50% off hehe) and decided to come over. Kap, Jess and Marie did a long (super difficult) puzzle (connected a few pieces) and watched netflix. We order Thai food (Kap ordered us cookies) and we relaxed all day. It was a special day where the three of us reminisced about San Francisco and all of our time here. It was a day no one wanted to end!!
Holmes Holiday Party- Jess’s favorite drink was the beet cocktail 😉
Cozy three course italian dinner with wine at 3pm! Best part of the afternoon was my hot date, Jess ;)
Jess and her neighborhood park (shoutout to nob hill, the real MVP) winning Shiri over with its views on views.
January 2019
On one of Jess’s final few Tahoe ski weekends, she SENT IT down a black diamond on her first weekend back of the season. Harrison found a great photo opp for Jess, Marie and Caroline against the Xtreme advanced only sign. The weekend was filled with playing Mafia, jamming to tunes down the slope, exploring Squaw valley, having some nice Apres Ski, and getting fed some good, slow-cooked food (haha!).
[JESS, INSERT YOUR PHOTOS FROM THE LAST WEEKEND IN SF!!!]
NOTES FROM YOUR BIFFLES TO SEND YOU OFF <3
Dear Jess,
Thank you for entering into my life and being saggitarius soulmates. I love that we are on the same page about so many things - planning, me-time, boys (kinda), beards, skiing, tardiness, traveling, being avoidant, being wholesome and SO MUCH MORE. I’m so happy we bonded over the last couple years we’ve known each other. I miss all the times I would knock on your door and catch up while you marie kondo-d your entire closet. Thank you for pushing me in new and different ways which you may not have realized (like forcing me to vote) and inspiring me to do good with the environment (hehe).
You are kind-hearted, loyal, so brave and bold and I’m so proud of you for going out on this adventure to New Zealand!! I will miss you lots in San Francisco and miss the ridiculous random shit we would laugh at during out ski trips or cooking or when we could catch up at home. Thank you for always listening whenever I felt like blabbing on and helping keep me grounded. So excited to visit New Zealand and can’t wait to explore! Plz don’t forget all the great memz we had in SF!!
Love you lots XOXO
Caroline
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jess!!! We have done it all together and now we can add New Zealand to that list too! I’m so glad that we got to overlap in SF and I had you here to show me to ropes. I can’t wait to follow your kiwi adventures and see all the fun things you do.
Love you lots!!
Xoxo
Irene
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JESSICA. My favorite small person to kiss on the head. I am so glad we could bond over our love of funky music and skiing. I’ll always be here to make sure you don’t look like an egg on the ski slopes and can’t wait to visit you and your Kiwi men soon. You are a sweet, funny, life of the party small person who’s going to find so much success and kiwi men in NZ. Love you so much, and may the yearly backpacking live on!
-Leez
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Jess, You are such a sweet soul that is thoughtful and cares about everyone around you. I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to meet ya (ty shiri!!) and get to know you over the last year and a half. I always have so much fun on our walks, breakfast dates, or ski trips (and so much more). I’m so extremely happy for you to be following your dreams (and a lil sad that we won’t be neighbors anymore). I can’t wait to come visit ya and enjoy more adventures together! Love ya, Marie!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jess - I love seeing how far we’ve come since our truss-ty mechanics class, traveling across the country and seeking out all the best from life! Although your soul belongs in a hippy world, I know you will find your people and place no matter where you land (just keep being YOU). New Zealand is lucky to be getting the tiniest force around. You will certainly be missed, but know that I’m just a WhatsApp message (or a quick flight!) away :). Excited for the tiny tourist travels ahead <3
Love, Shiri
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blonde Meets Brunette. Relatively Tall Meets Considerably Short. East Coast Meets West Coast. Engineering Major Meets Fine Arts Major. Happy Music Meets Sad Music. On paper we might come across as opposites, but internally and emotionally I am so grateful for the rich grey areas and nuances we’ve discovered that we contain. The odds were slim for us to cross paths in this big ol’ universe, and I’m so grateful we found each other to help tame and ground the ups and downs of being-in-your-twenties. You have been a guiding, real, and empowering force since Day 1, and you’ve taught me so much. I can’t wait to see all you accomplish in this new chapter and far beyond! ALL the love to the best work wife there ever was.
Eva Slusser
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yo,
Glad we have been able to go on a bunch of snowy adventures. Look forward to visiting your weird kiwi fire life sometime and I'm sorry I always assumed you were the mafia.
-Dave
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jess,
It was great getting to know you even if it was only for a short amount of time. Will always remember you bombing it down that double black diamond at squaw, the hike in Berkeley, and the constant disapproving looks sent my way.
GO PRO CAPTURE
- H
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jess!! Thank you for being the kindest soul your are. I enjoyed every bits and pieces of our friendship from Stas' lab to smoke control class to getting to bond more here in SF.
Can't wait to follow the tiny tourist adventures through this new kiwi chapter. Auckland is lucky to have you!
Love you and see you soon!
Parisa
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This post serves as written confirmation that I have previously stated thank you and please and no longer require these societal norms to be restated. Once I see you in New Zealand, reside in your dwelling and depart back to San Francisco, I will not provide a thank you note. I expect the same from you.
See you soon,
Leron
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jess - We will miss you, but having a friend leave SF is easier when you know theres great adventures ahead for them. I’m excited for all your NZ adventures, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous. Keep us in the loop and I look forward to seeing you in the future.

ARTIST FEATURE - THE RINGARDS
‘PUNK IS A GENTLE KISS’
BEING DIRECTLY COMPARED TO RIVAL BANDS INCLUDING FONTAINES D.C, IDLES AND SHAME, THE RINGARDS DESERVE ACCLAIMED SUCCESS AND ARE NOT STOPPING UNTIL THEY ACHIEVE IT.
THE RINGARDS, (FRENCH FOR OUT OF FASHION/TACKY) ARE AN ALTERNATIVE ACT BASED IN HACKNEY, LONDON. THE FIVE PIECE FORMED BACK IN THE SPRING OF 2018. IN THAT SHORT TIME THEY HAVE GAINED A LOT OF ATTENTION FROM MUSIC BLOGS AND RADIO STATIONS ACROSS THE WAVES AND HAVE RECENTLY OPENED FOR FRENCH BUZZ BAND, ‘PAPOOZ’ AT A BEACH FESTIVAL IN FRANCE LAST SUMMER. FROM THIS, THEY EARNED THE OPPORTUNITY TO TOUR WITH ‘PAPOOZ’ ON THEIR NORTH AMERICAN AND CANADIAN TOUR. THE FIVE PIECE FLIRT WITH POST PUNK INFLUENCES, GIVING THE SOUND A MELODIC, GRITTY OUTCOME. HAILING FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD, THE BAND IS FRONTED BY ENZO ON VOCALS, WILLIAM ON LEAD GUITAR AND VOCALS, VINNY ON RYTHYM GUITAR AND VOCALS, GARY ON BASS AND JOE ON DRUMS AND ELECTRONICS.
WE CAUGHT UP WITH ENZO, ISOLATING IN A DALSTON TOWN HOUSE TO TALK ABOUT INFLUENCES, CORONAVIRUS AND PRODUCING SONGS WITH THE BAND VIRTUALLY.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT CORONAVIRUS SITUATION AND HOW IS IT AFFECTING THE RINGARDS AND THE REST OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
‘WE’VE ALWAYS LOOKED AT OUR DIFFERENCES FOR INSPIRATION AND NOT BEING ABLE TO PHYSICALLY WEAR OFF THAT AS BEEN TOUGH ON THE CREATIVE FRONT. WE’RE TRYING TO WRITE, FORCE OURSELVES TO PUSH OUR CURIOSITY AND LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE, WHICH ISN’T NECESSARILY A MELODIC IMAGE, IT COULD BE READING, WATCHING VARIOUS FILMS, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO TAKE ON A MUSICAL FORM, BUT WE’RE STILL LISTENING MOST IMPORTANTLY LISTENING TO OURSELVES, SOMETHING THAT WE OFTEN NEGLECT.
ALL WE CAN DO IS TO CARRY SOME OF THOSE ASPIRING MEDIUMS AND PICK EACH OTHER’S BRAINS ONCE THIS IS DONE. THE BOREDOM WILL VISUAL ITSELF IN ONE WAY OR AN OTHER.’
WHICH SUBCULTURE DEFINES THE RINGARDS?
‘I’D SAY THE PUNK SUBCULTURE, WHICH IS OH SO RELEVANT TODAY AS WE’RE ALL REFERENCING THAT PAST, THAT YOUTH IN REVOLT AND ANGER WITHIN...
AND AS IN ALL TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY, WE’RE CLINGING TO OUR HUMBLE AND HOLISTIC OBSERVATIONS IN SEARCH OF OTHERS, AND FROM ALL THAT ANGER AND ISOLATION COMES A CERTAIN UNIFICATION BOUND BY A SHARED FEELING. PUNK IS A GENTLE KISS.’
BASED ON WHAT YOU SAY DO YOU FEEL LIKE TODAY’S BANDS CAN BE CATEGORISED INTO A SUBCULTURE?
‘LESS AND LESS, I BELIEVE THAT MELODIC GAP IS SLOWLY CLOSING ON ITSELF. IF YOU GO OUTSIDE AND LOOK AT THE PAINTER THE WRITER THE PUNK, THE GOTH AND THE POWER POP TRIO THEIR ALL FIGHTING THE SAME BATTLE.
AND WE’RE ALL STARTING TO RECOGNISE A BIT OF EACH OTHER AMONG THAT.
WE’RE LEARNING FROM ONE ANOTHER AND TAKING ON ETHICS THAT MIGHT REFERENCE A SUB CULTURAL SCHOOL OF THE PAST OR A DIALECT FROM AN OTHER NEIGHBOURHOOD.
IT’S MERGING AND IT’S GOOD.
IT CREATES A HUMAN UNITY AND UNDRESSES A FUCKED UP SYSTEM, THAT EVENTUALLY WILL BE EXPOSED AS YESTERDAY’S HIERARCHY.’
FROM RIVETING RECORDS TO TEARING UP STAGES ACROSS EUROPE, THE RINGARDS ARE DEFINITELY THE MOST EXCITING NEW BAND TO BE PUSHING THROUGH THE LONDON SCENE AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

Note
All the "weird asks"
1. coffee mugs, teacups, wine glasses, water bottles, or soda cans? -I’m actually obsessed with coffee mugs and tea cups even though I don’t drink coffee nor tea.
2. chocolate bars or lollipops? -Chocolate bars
3. bubblegum or cotton candy? -Cotton Candy!
4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you? -It’s funny because I actually found some of my old report cards recently... they range from “a pleasure to have in class!” to “danger of failing the course” even though my grade for both of those would be an “A” ?
5. do you prefer to drink soda from soda cans, soda bottles, plastic cups or glass cups? -The soda from a bottle from Mexico hits completely different.
6. pastel, boho, tomboy, preppy, goth, grunge, formal or sportswear? -Personally, I don’t dress like any of those but I am attracted to tomboys.
7. earbuds or headphones? -Depends. Mostly, earbuds.
8. movies or tv shows? -Movies.
9. favorite smell in the summer? -All the seasonal smells from the stores!
10. game you were best at in p.e.? -Softball or tennis.
11. what you have for breakfast on an average day? -One slice of toast and one egg.
12. name of your favorite playlist? -I made my friend a playlist called “Emo Turn Up and I like that one a lot.
13. lanyard or key ring? -Key ring, but I have a lanyard because I tend to leave my purse in the car and that way I can just carry my keys around my neck. Also, my lanyard is Nightmare Before Christmas themed, so she’s beautiful.
14. favorite non-chocolate candy? -Lollipops, actually lol
15. favorite book you read as a school assignment? -Rosemary’s Baby. Although, I kind of got to pick the book for my assignment.
16. most comfortable position to sit in? -One leg is usually elevated while the other has my foot flat on the ground.
17. most frequently worn pair of shoes? -My Chuck Taylor’s!
18. ideal weather? -I have two technically. I love blue skies with a slight breeze but I also love windy rainy weather.
19. sleeping position? -On my side, on leg curled up and the other straight (kind of like how I sit) while I hold a pillow to my chest.
20. preferred place to write (i.e., in a note book, on your laptop, sketchpad, post-it notes, etc.)? -Notebook and post its!
21. obsession from childhood? -Stickers!! Although I never actually stuck them anywhere except on other papers or just left them on their page. I collected them so I didn’t like them getting ugly.
22. role model? -Dita Von Teese!
23. strange habits? -I guess if it’s habit, I probably wouldn’t consider it strange. I do write everything down. Like, everything. I have a list of every movie I’ve ever watched (I had to stop updating it because it was giving me anxiety due to how many movies I watch), I make post it notes that I eventually compile into notebook pages. Any information I never want to lose gets written down somewhere.
24. favorite crystal? Aventurine
25. first song you remember hearing? -It would’ve been something in Spanish. Most likely one of the many songs my mom used to sing to me.
26. favorite activity to do in warm weather? -Although I rarely get to do it: sitting in the sun/going to the beach or a pool. If it’s warm with a breeze I can lay outside for quite some time.
27. favorite activity to do in cold weather? -Watch movies on the couch with a blanket over me.
28. five songs to describe you? -Brown Eyed Girl (the original is nice but I love the Reel Big Fish version), Because I’m Awesome (The Dollyrots), Hot Mess (Cobra Starship), I’m Just a Kid (even though I’m almost 25. Simple Plan), Independent (Webbie)
29. best way to bond with you? -Be open and honest. I love talking about books, movies, and music but talk to me about conspiracy theories and ghost stories and you’ll have my heart. I love when people have stories revolving around their culture. I’m Mexican and we have lots of myths and stories to swap so it’s awesome.
30. places that you find sacred? -A person’s bedroom can be sacred. Call me silly but Disneyland is kind of sacred to me. It hold so many wonderful memories. I only like to share certain spots with certain people sometimes.
31. what outfit do you wear to kick ass and take names? -Probably whatever outfit I have on at the moment. I don’t really plan to kick anyone’s ass let alone want to plan a whole outfit for it. I assume leggings and a t shirt will do?
32. top five favorite vines? -omg I miss vine! I was actually going through vines on YouTube recently... The “Miss Keisha” vine always kills me, any vine with Sarah Baska, anything that Zane and Heath ever made, Jay Versace has really funny vines too, and I still quote the “welcome to Chilis” vine constantly. Picking 5 is way too hard.
33. most used phrase in your phone? -“it be like that sometimes” or “yaaaaaaas”
34. advertisements you have stuck in your head? -The Red Robin commercial and the O’Riley Auto Parts one play in my head on loop at the worst times.
35. average time you fall asleep? -I lay down around 9ish but don’t actually fall asleep until 10PM
36. what is the first meme you remember ever seeing? -That’s way too hard to remember. Probably something I would consider really stupid now.
37. suitcase or duffel bag? -Depends on how long I’ll be away/how many clothes I’ll need. Usually, a suitcase.
38. lemonade or tea? -Lemonade.
39. lemon cake or lemon meringue pie? -omg why would you make me pick?! Lemon meringue pie though...
40. weirdest thing to ever happen at your school? -I went to a public high school in LA. We mostly had riots and fights and I stayed away from all of that.
41. last person you texted? -Jayla. I need her to wake up so I can tell her about my dream about Beyoncé.
42. jacket pockets or pants pockets? -Por que no los dos?! I like buying men’s jean jackets because they have pockets inside though...
43. hoodie, leather jacket, cardigan, jean jacket or bomber jacket? -Depends. I tend to get cold easily so I usually start with a cardigan but I love jean jackets.
44. favorite scent for soap? -just plain ol clean??
45. which genre: sci-fi, fantasy or superhero? -Fantasy
46. most comfortable outfit to sleep in? -Depends on the weather but usually just shorts and a t shirt.
47. favorite type of cheese? -Mozzarella
48. if you were a fruit, what kind would you be? -Grapes. Sweet and sometimes a little sour lol
49. what saying or quote do you live by? -“Let your imaginarlo run free”. I actually have it tattooed on my right bicep.
50. what made you laugh the hardest you ever have? -My friends always get me to laugh really hard. I think the hardest I’ve ever laughed was when my friend tried to say something and she completely botched the sentence so it was pure gibberish and yet I understood her? We just looked at each other and burst into laughter.
51. current stresses? -Work, school, life... the usual??
52. favorite font? -Arial
53. what is the current state of your hands? -I am typing my answers to these questions on my phone...
54. what did you learn from your first job? -I only have infinite patience for kids, not adults.
55. favorite fairy tale? -Used to be Cinderella, but I was never really one for fairy tales tbh
56. favorite tradition? -I don’t actually have any. Never really had anyone to have traditions with.
57. the three biggest struggles you’ve overcome? -2018 was an entire struggle, car crashes because idiot drivers crashed into mine and totaled mine (TWICE), my entire life as a whole has been a struggle tbh. Every day is one that I try my hardest to overcome.
58. four talents you’re proud of having? -I don’t really consider myself as someone with any talent, let alone four, but... A mathematician once taught me how to divide any number by five in my head, I’m pretty good at mimicking certain accents, idk of this counts as a talent but I can drink quite a bit before I actually feel anything, I can recite certain movies down to what song will play during certain scenes, and I would consider myself the ultimate Disneyland tour guide. That’s five but it’s all I can think of so if one doesn’t sound like one, we have an extra.
59. if you were a video game character, what would your catchphrase be? -“Oh shit, here we go again...”
60. if you were a character in an anime, what kind of anime would you want it to be? -I know nothing about anime so I wouldn’t even know. I would want to make a joke about being in the ones that are essentially pornos but I’m probably wrong with that too.
61. favorite line you heard from a book/movie/tv show/etc.? -“The greatest thing you will ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” Idk if the line comes from elsewhere but I first heard it in the movie Moulin Rouge and it has stuck with me since.
62. seven characters you relate to? -Oh geez, I don’t really relate to any tbh but seven characters I like: Princess Tiana, Shane from The L Word, Theo from the Netflix version of A Haunting of Hill House, Satine from Moulin Rouge, Wall-E, Cassandra from Saved!, and The Grinch (as wonderfully played by Jim Carrey)
63. five songs that would play in your club? -Act Up (City Girls), Motivation (Normani), LGBT (Cupcakke), Alcohol (Millionaires, lol), My Type (Saweetie)
64. favorite website from your childhood? -Neopets!

Cemetery was the right vibe for a glamour goth wedding
Grossan, a music aficionado, and the rock musician Ayers, who has jazz in his blood, aren’t the “wedding factory” types. (Elizabeth Lippman/The New York Times)
Molly Creeden
Just months after they started dating more than two years ago, Ally Jane Grossan and Nabil Ayers felt certain they were headed for marriage, and it was with as much surety that they didn’t want their wedding to feel formulaic and familiar.
“We wanted to get married somewhere that’s isn’t a wedding factory,” said Grossan, a founder of Brooklyn FI, a financial planning firm geared to creatives and tech entrepreneurs in New York. “It’s always the same: a beautiful space, flowers and salmon or chicken, and we just wanted to do something that wasn’t that.”
By many markers, the couple’s evening wedding on Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Masonic Lodge at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery could not be typecast. There was DJ Gregg Foreman — lithe former music director for the musician Cat Power with Joan Jett hair — who played songs by the Cure on the piano. There was the bride’s walk down the aisle with her parents, to the cascading drumbeats of the eerie first bars of “Atmosphere” by post-punk band Joy Division. There was the irrevocable fact that several yards away, entertainment industry legacies — from Mickey Rooney to Johnny Ramone — lay deceased.
“I don’t know why, I’ve always loved cemeteries,” said Grossan, 30. “Père Lachaise in Paris is one of my favorite places; Green-Wood in Brooklyn. I don’t think they’re morbid. I think they’re beautiful.” Ayers, 46, agreed: “It’s like a beautiful park.”
It was at another wedding reception in June 2016 at House of Yes, an events space in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where Ayers first spotted Grossan. “I remember thinking, who is that beautiful woman standing there?” he said. The two were in attendance to celebrate the marriage of respective co-workers: Anna Bond, with whom Ayers worked at 4AD, an independent record label where he is the US label manager, and the groom, J Edward Keyes, who was Grossan’s then-boss at Bandcamp, a self-publishing music platform where she was a senior editor.
Ayers waited to make his move until he saw Grossan chatting with Joan LeMay, a friend from Seattle, where from 1997 to 2008, he ran Sonic Boom Records and was a drummer in indie rock bands like the Long Winters. Ayers greeted his friend, who introduced him to Grossan. “My first impression was that he was wearing this fabulous suit with cool glasses,” she said of Ayers’ signature oversize frames.
The pair spoke for a few minutes before rejoining the party, and then found each other again, talking for an hour against the backdrop of karaoke. They spoke about music. At 24, Grossan had been appointed the series editor of the publisher Bloomsbury’s 33-1/3 Series, a collection of biographies about individual music albums and artists. “I, and anyone else who had ever heard about it, was impressed by that,” Ayers said.
Ayers is the son of noted jazz composer and vibraphonist Roy Ayers, with whom he has had a distant relationship. He was given a drum set at age 2 by his uncle, jazz musician Alan Braufman, and has made music his lifeblood since.

“I remember someone telling me that night: ‘Oh that’s Nabil Ayers from 4AD, that guy’s a big shot,’” Grossan said. After the two parted ways, Grossan followed Ayers on Twitter in the Uber ride back to her home in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
The next day, Ayers reached out to LeMay with a request: Could she ask Grossan to pass along her email address? Once in hand, Ayers sent Grossan a casual message mentioning Skee-Ball, which Grossan had revealed was a talent. Two days later, Ayers was surprised he hadn’t heard back. “I thought it was weird. We’d gotten along well, and my friend had asked her if it was OK to get in touch.”
After giving the go-ahead, Grossan thought it was odd that she hadn’t heard from Ayers. “I checked the spam folder and was like, ‘No way, this doesn’t happen.’” There was Ayers’s email from his 4AD address.
Grossan responded immediately and the two made plans to meet the following Sunday for a drink. On the Thursday evening beforehand, however, Grossan was seated at a table in the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Libera Awards — a ceremony honoring the indie music community — and heard Ayers’ name announced. She looked up to see him walking on stage to accept an award on behalf of singer/songwriter Grimes for the video “Kill V. Maim.” Grossan emailed him: “Short and sweet — great speech.”
They found each other after the program and Grossan invited Ayers to join a group heading to a karaoke bar (note: for how much karaoke appears in this story, the groom does not particularly enjoy it). There, jammed into a bench with industry peers, Ayers was enchanted as Grossan sang the grim, rapid fire lyrics to System of a Down’s “Chop Suey” with perfect elocution. “She took her shoes off for the song, and I was like, ‘Whoa, she’s really going to do it,’” Ayers said. “I was really impressed.”
The group dispersed and Grossan and Ayers wound up at New Wonjo in Koreatown, talking over cold noodles late into the night. That night the couple kissed for the first time.
It would be the first of many dates.
“Most of the men in the music journalism space are obnoxious: They’re proud of knowing the names of every single album,” Grossan said. “But Nabil knows more that everyone and is so understated. He never tries to display his knowledge to anyone. He’s just excited to talk about it.”
Like the tongue-twisting lyrics to Chop Suey, the relationship moved at a heady clip. On an early date, Grossan mentioned that her favorite album was Hole’s Celebrity Skin; several weeks later, on her birthday in July, Ayers gave her a copy in vinyl. That month, the pair decided on impulse that Grossan would be Ayers’ date to a September wedding in Paris. And in October, Ayers met Grossan’s father, television producer Mark Grossan, in a hot tub during Orange County’s Beach Goth music festival. By Christmas, they had plans for Ally Jane Grossan to move into Ayers’ Brooklyn Heights apartment when her lease was up in May.
In early 2018, Ayers began looking for rings to propose to Grossan. Once he found one — a vintage emerald-cut diamond with two baguettes that reminded him of the art deco angles of the Chrysler Building — he put his plan in motion. He had arranged to have Julien Baker, Grossan’s favorite musician, perform a private serenade during the Sasquatch Music Festival in George, Washington, on May 25, 2018.
But the couple was running late that day. Grossan got her first speeding ticket while they were en route to the Gorge Ampitheater from Seattle. She was frazzled as Ayers hurried her through security, texting with Baker’s manager about the mere minutes they had before the musician was due on stage. Telling Grossan they were hurrying to meet a friend at a backstage video shoot, Ayers wove them through the 20,000-person crowd, past the tour buses, and around a bend behind the stage. There, they found Baker and her violinist on a cliff overlooking the gorge. She started playing Love Me Tender by Elvis. When the violin solo began, Ayers dropped to one knee and asked Grossan to marry him.
The couple chose to marry in Los Angeles, where Grossan grew up and where her grandparents, Murray and Rosalyn Grossan, 95 and 94, live. (They were unable, however, to attend the wedding). Ayers had recently organised a show at the Hollywood Cemetery and thought it might dually be suitable for matrimony. On the summer day when Grossan and her mother toured the cemetery for a visit, the staff was cleaning up the site of the memorial for Chris Cornell, Soundgarden’s frontman.

On the evening of December 20, however, morbidity was the last thing on the minds of the 125 friends and family who gathered in the temple of Masonic Lodge in festive interpretations of “glamour goth,” the couple’s suggested attire for guests. This meant oversize earrings, peacock feathers, sparkly slides, tattooed fingers, faux fur and evening gowns, with an over-index of black rimmed glasses paired with long rocker hair.
“Each of you are glowing tonight, and the love of life that you are share with each other helps to light this world around us,” said the officiant, Rabbi Michele Ellise Lenke, under a white huppah in the temple room, which was a vision in crimson, from carpet to walls, with a Masonic Eastern Star hanging in the center. “Julien Baker may sing about turning the lights out,” the rabbi said, “but my wish for you is to keep shining bright.”
In his vows, Ayers spoke of his respect for Grossan’s drive and ambition, and called her his motivation in life. “I’ve always been a happy person,” he said. “It’s become clear to me that you’ve always been a happy person. So it’s hard to believe that I would meet someone who has made me infinitely happier, but you’ve done that.”
Grossan, who is taking her husband’s last name, praised his accomplishments and his “infectious warmth.” “Waiters, bartenders, shopkeepers and strangers we meet are immediately drawn to you,” she said. “It’s like the whole world is completely in love with you, but not as much as me. I vow to protect and cherish that feeling.”
In toasts over dinner in the building’s Eastern Star Room, where guests drank sparkling Topo Chico water, natural libations from Silverlake’s Psychic Wines, and ate a Mediterranean buffet feast, Ayers was referred to by a co-worker, Gabe Spierer, as “the nicest guy in rock.”
(“Not only rock, but one of the nicest guys in earth, wind and water,” Matt Berninger, the frontman for the rock band the National amended later in the evening).
Ayers’ mother Louise Vesper, a former ballet dancer, recalled seeing the body language between the couple for the first time, and praised the fact that “in their busy lives, they still make time for their parents.” The party moved back across the hall to the Masonic Temple for dancing, and then onto an after party at Brass Monkey — for karaoke, of course.

The Growlers premiere new album, Casual Acquaintances: Stream https://ift.tt/2viRRwv
Ahead of their very own Beach Goth 2018 festival in Los Angeles, The Growlers have released a new album. The fuzz-laden, gritty collection is called Casual Acquaintances and available to stream in full below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Their sixth full-length overall follows City Club from 2016, which featured production from Julian Casablancas. Its 10 tracks, including synth-y lead single “Problems III”, date back at least two years, originating during the band’s City Club sessions. A press statement specifically notes the self-produced Casual Acquaintances consists of “demos, works-in-progress and other unfinished business” from that time.
This year’s edition of Beach Goth goes down August 5th in downtown LA. It boasts a lineup of Casablancas’ The Voidz, The Drums, GWAR, and of course, The Growlers. After the festival, The Growlers — once dubbed Ellen DeGeneres’ favorite band — will continue on their “Beach Goth World Tour”, which runs until early November.

Review: The Growlers Brought Beach Goth Vibes to the Riviera
Earlier this month, The Growler’s brought their laid back beach goth sound to a starting to cool down Chicago. Donned in star covered overalls and suits, set up in front of a bevy of Beach Goth murals (including a Growlers-ified Selena, Virgin Mary, and more), the sunsoaked band presented a chill set that felt way more like a gathering of friends than a straight up concert.
I’ve been to my fair share of Growlers shows and each one of them seemed like a completely different band. The first time was at Lincoln Hall, where the group were laid back but delivering some rambunctious tunes that had the whole crowd dancing. The last time I had the chance to see them was during the beginning of their City Club tour, were the group was dressed to the nines in mariachi like outfits and firing on all cylinders at Thalia Hall. Their sound remained as amazing as always, but their stage presence was commanding and welcoming.
I didn’t know which version of the Growlers’ I was going to get, but once I was settled in I could see there was something a little off about the show that evening. It was unfortunate because it never truly felt like anyone’s fault, if anything the band seemed to be pushing forward with all their talent. Frontman Brooks Nielsen was battling a cold, occasionally sipping tea throughout the night. His already gruff voice sounded a far less jovial than it usually does, just trying to get by as best it could.
The set list also felt odd. I figured with a brand new album out, Casual Acquaintances tracks would take a dominating appearance. But that wasn’t the case. The album is a definite departure from the band’s previous two albums City Club and Chinese Fountain. While the songs come from the City Club sessions, they lack the overall polished that came with that album in favor of a more raw and early Growlers sound. The result is a much more tempered album that could have been amazing if performed live, but alas we were only supplied with “Decoy Face” and “Problems II” that evening.
The rest of the set jumped around their discography, giving each of their releases a little spotlight while maintaining a heavy preference to City Club and Chinese Fountain. The laid back mood of the night fit the whole session quite well, with Neilsen joking with the crowd throughout the night and letting everyone groove away to their favorite tracks Like “Old Cold River” and “Naked Kids” to lesser played ones like “Sea Goth Lion Blues”.
They finished off the night with “Goin Gets Tough” in a moment that seemed to reach the peak of their previous performances. Nielsen’s voice sounded as if it finally got past the cold that was holding him down and the crows burst forth enthusiastically as ever, singing along with song’s optimistic message of striving forward no matter how bad it gets. It almost mirrored the set’s atmosphere, no matter what troubles got in the way The Growlers pushed onward and delivered a satisfying show. The song has finished off a few of the Growlers’ shows I’ve been at and remains one of the best ways to cap off a night.

Goth news and commentary for September 2017
Tweet
Welcome to September, oh happy month of joy… Why? The kids have all gone away again. You can now go shopping during the day, catch a bus without having to decode an Enigma’s worth of “school holiday” shorthand on timetables, and get a taxi without having to wait an hour. While this does of course mean that Winter is Coming (yep, still with the GoT) take the win, if only for a week or so.
In this blog post I’m going to bore on with some more Game of Thrones fangirling because obviously this will be my last chance until late 2018 or even 2019, (also, spoilers) and hook you up with a roundup of the latest recommended content from other blogging Goths, and news from the Goth world at large.
Did me some shopping
n an attempt to ward off the winter depression that seems to be progressively worsening over the last few years of my life, I have bought myself a SAD lamp and started using it for the first time today, and so I am typing this while sunbathing in the LED light of a thousand suns. I have no idea if this is going to help me any or not, but I might have formed a better opinion next month, if I have not gone blind from sitting too close to it by that point.
I also got myself a new pair of winter shit-kickers from New Rock, and am currently sitting about in them wearing them in before everything outside turns to mud.
I did get a bit too adventurous yesterday though and thought I had broken them in more effectively than I had, which resulted in a large blister that I am definitely not going to pick to the point of sepsis. However, whilst this is a pain in the short term, I do find that sturdier boots like this that take a while to wear in also tend to be much more hardwearing in the long term, and obviously as they’re New Rocks, will certainly be good for several winters to come.
Cradle of Filth drop new album, announce tour
Cradle of Filth have a brand-new album out on the 22nd September, called “Cryptoriana-The Seductiveness of Decay” and I’m totally here for it already based on the title alone. You can download two of the album’s new tracks already here, and also pre-order the album too.
Meanwhile, check out the official video for “You Will Know The Lion By His Claw” as a teaser:
youtube
The band have also just announced UK-wide tour dates in October and November, and you can get the full list of dates and venues and reserve your tickets on their official website.
Goth blog posts to read this month
La Carmina leads the kind of lifestyle I can only dream about-Gothing her way around the world in style and blogging about it as she goes. Currently in Malaysia, La Carmina’s latest blog post brings us this brilliant image:
So when you start seeing it on “Goths in Hot Weather” or Goths on the Beach or whatever, just remember where it came from… This blog post is definitely one not to miss, and includes several other images that you’ll want to see, involving the same inflatable unicorn, as well as a whole cave’s worth of nesting bats. JEALOUS.
Gothy Two Shoes is a plus-size Goth in Australia, who I am really pleased to see has resumed blogging regularly again and now has several months of content for me to catch up on, including loads of great step-by-step Gothy DIY posts, as well as her own general content and thoughts.
THOSE NAILS THOUGH!!
Her latest post takes the form of a QandA challenge that you can of course take on yourself, or just use to learn a little bit more about one of my favourite Goth bloggers.
The Blogging Goth (Tim) reviews Infest’s final day at the end of August in his latest post, with mixed views on the different acts and entertainment. “Are you waltzing back there? Is that a northern thing?” Is now my favourite line, and one that I intend to find a way to work into conversations sooner rather than later. 😊
Game of Thrones
And finally! I left this til the end for those that have not yet finished watching season 7, or who have no interest in it whatsoever (in which case, you do you hon, but we probably can’t be friends).
So season seven has finished, and we’re not going to be seeing any more of Kit Harrington’s ass for at least another year or two. There have been a reasonable amount of picky or partially critical reviews of this season (albeit these have been almost drowned out by positive accolades) which I suppose is going to happen given that we are now heading towards the finale and also, outside of book territory-but for my part, I have really enjoyed the whole season and am just pissed that it’s all over for now.
The seven seasons have taken us from INCEST, EWW, to being all about the aunt-humping, the remaining living Starks finally kicking some ass and keeping themselves from being killed, and oh my lord, I have also been loving the wit and humour too, in the show itself but also in the social media posts that pop up after each episode airs.
On which note, I’d like to give a shout-out to Gilly on behalf of any woman anywhere who has ever had a man take all the credit for her work, and also to thank Twitter and Tumblr for the comedy gold that the season has provided.
Before I sign off, I just want to throw out an unpopular opinion bomb and watch the world burn: Brienne should not fucking well end up with Tormund.
Since when did a guy liking a woman and being creepy about it while the woman in question shows total disinterest at best and horror at worst make for the foundations of a solid ship? UMM NO. I want Brienne to get it together with The Hound (one of my favourites, not least because his liberal use of an irritated or disgusted-sounding “fuck off” at least three times per scene pretty much makes him my spirit animal) or possibly Jaime Lannister, who YAY! Finally walked away.
Sandor Clegane FTW, and we’re just going to neatly ignore that whole stone-throwing stupidity incident for now. If Brienne ends up with Tormund I am gonna be MAD, k? Remember that come season eight.
